How to view 3D Scan Data

3D laser scan data or point clouds are comprised of hundreds of thousands, even millions of points.  Without processing, these point clouds do not represent much in the way of valuable information. However, once processed, a 3D laser survey can be supplied in multiple file formats for direct import into your existing design software. Alternatively, our documentation services provide accurate conversions into:

Registered
Point CLoud

A 3D visual representation created from the raw scan data in Faro SCENE or Autodesk Recap.  Although this isn’t quite photographic quality, it is a cost-effective way of demonstrating the existing site layout without any additional modelling.

Modelling

The conversion of a point cloud into a 3D model can be easily distributed and exported in multiple formats to most major software packages.

Draughting

Creating plans, technical and fabrication drawings and topographical surveys directly from point cloud data or 3D models available in digital or PDF formats.

Converted point cloud data can be used to produce accurate draughting and fabrication drawings, floor plans and elevations along with topographical mappings. 2D applications are available in a variety of formats such as .DWG and .DXF. These are digital versions of a typical drawing plan or blueprint.  Digital documentation is reducing the need for physical hard copies, however, all digital drawings can be produced and printed in traditional .PDF formats.

3D laser scanners acquire vast amounts of data but there are occasions when you may not always need all the data captured.  In addition, the more data that is modelled, the larger the file size and understandably, the greater the cost.  For this reason, drawings and models can be created with the correct amount of data suitable to complete the specific requirements of the project. 

Our Levels of Detail (LOD) can range from a single 2D drawing to a complete 3D model. For example, you may wish to show there is a building present at LOD1, but the plant inside at LOD4.
